Permalink Paulson's Secret $2 Trillion in Loans Posted in Outside News on November 17th, 2008 by davidk Bloomberg News, Democracy Now! and other news organizations are reporting that the U.S. Treasury is refusing to disclose to whom it has given over $2 trillion in emergency loans. This money is being given under an emergency program that by-passed Congressional reporting standards required in the $700 bailout bill. Paulson and Bernanke are claiming that they cannot disclose the loans because doing so could potentially affect the bank or corporation's market standing. More info at DN! and Bloomberg. From The YouTube Presidency (Washington Post)
By Jose Antonio Vargas
"The White House has gone YouTube.
Today, President-elect Obama will record the weekly Democratic address not just on radio but also on video -- a first. The address, typically four minutes long, will be turned into a YouTube video and posted on Obama's transition site, Change.gov, once the radio address is made public on Saturday morning. "

Permalink Ballots to Be Counted November 12 Posted on November 11th, 2008 by davidk Gail Fenumiai, Director of the Alaska Division of Elections announced yesterday that approximately 50,000 of the outstanding 70,000 absentee and early votes from last week's election will be counted on Wednesday. The Division updated its tabulation of uncounted votes and now lists 52, 324 that are to be counted this week. The status of the over 18,000 questioned ballots is still being determined by the regional offices and some of those may be counted on Wednesday as well. Permalink 0 comments » Juror #11 has a blog! Posted in State/Local News on November 10th, 2008 by jenn You know Juror #11, the famous alternate juror who was brought into the Stevens deliberations after crazy Juror #4 went AWOL? He has a blog! And he's blogging about the Stevens trial! It's a serial, incomplete at this point, but you can follow it here.Spoiler alert: Juror #11's nickname for Uncle Ted is Salmmy. What could that mean? Posted in State/Local News on November 6th, 2008 by jenn Nate Silver of 538.com, the poll meta-analyzer whose presidential and senate predictions pretty much nailed actual results, gave Mark Begich a 100% chance of beating Ted Stevens in this election. Alaska's Senate race is still too close to call. However, Begich was supposed to have won by double digits. Ethan Berkowitz was supposed to have beaten Don Young by double digits as well. So what happened? How could an election cycle that we now know witnessed the most accurate polling predictions in history, get it so wrong in Alaska? Nate offers his thoughts on the matter here. Permalink The Cost of Slumber Posted in News From Other Sources on October 30th, 2008 by Sharon The Cost of SlumberMonday 27 October 2008by: Dahr Jamail, t r u t h o u t | PerspectiveLong before I discovered the mysterious mix of pain and relief that writing from the heart brings, I was pursuing a Masters in English Literature at Central Washington University in the small town of Ellensburg, Washington.I was broke, like most grad students, and supported myself by working for two individuals confined to assisted living situations. One of them, Larry, was completely paralyzed. He was unable to speak, and could only blink his eyes. He had been in prison when the ill effects of an operation he undertook there had gone wrong, and were then compounded by an error by the anesthesiologist. His sustenance came from gulping small spoonfuls of food blended with milk. Never in his life would he ever again "enjoy" a meal. He would never be experiencing the simple actions of walking, singing, dancing, swimming, driving, fishing, wandering ...Read the rest of this article here...http://www.truthout.org/102708A Permalink Palin's primping problem in perspective Posted in Opinion by FOR Members on October 22nd, 2008 by jenn Let's put aside the $150,000 shopping spree that the RNC took our governor on when she became its vice-presidential nominee. I'm more interested in another line item.Awhile back, I watched the Metallica documentary, Some Kind of Monster. In this surprisingly uncensored look at the pathos of a metal band going through the crisis of middle age and artistic statis, it was revealed that Metallica paid a psychiatrist $10,000 A MONTH to support them during their album recording. I found the number outrageous. $10,000 A MONTH in psychiatric support? Come on!In September, the McCain-Palin campaign spent $13,200 for a make-up artist to do up Gov. Palin.13K for make-up? Suddenly 10K for a shrink doesn't seem so crazy. Permalink Uh-oh. Permalink Daily Show's Jason Jones visits Wasilla Posted in Opinion by FOR Members on October 22nd, 2008 by jenn Sarah Palin made Jon Stewart very angry when she talked about the Pro-American parts of America. John is still smarting about 9/11, and his contention is that if New York City is good enough for Al-Quaeda, it should be good enough for a vice-presidential candidate. So, Wasilla got some wrath last night. I'm sure Jones could have found some sane Alaskans in Palin's hometown, but that wouldn't have been as amusing... Permalink Inside the Belly of the Meltdown - The View from Iceland Posted on October 20th, 2008 by davidk The world financial crisis this fall has reportedly hit nowhere harder than in Iceland. The country’s three largest banks, Landsbanki, Kaupthing and Glitnir have all been taken over by the government. Numerous reports in the international press have said that the nation itself is bankrupt. What does this look like on the ground? Soup kitchen lines, people in the streets, transportation shut down? No. So far life goes on, more or less as normal. The skits are definitely funny enough. The rap is not to be missed, and the person doing the First Dude is truly fantastic. I do wish that Gov. Palin could have actually performed the rap herself though. That would have been something.See both skits here. The episode reminded me a little of Admiral Stockdale.
