Hillary won't attack Palin???
Now, why wouldn't she?
According to this Rupert Murdoch outlet in Australia:Hillary Clinton may be the most obvious choice to throw into the ring against the new darling of American politics, Sarah Palin, but the failed Democratic presidential candidate is refusing the job.
"We're not going to be anybody's attack dog against Sarah Palin," a Clinton insider said yesterday.
It's an extraordinary act of hubris from a woman whose success in exposing Barack Obama's weakness in working-class Democratic states such as Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana may have been the reason that John McCain chose a gun-toting, God-loving mother of five as his running mate.
Although she is 60 and unlikely to have another shot at the White House, Clinton is apparently concerned that she would appear ungenerous to the Republicans' first female vice-presidential candidate if she were to go after her.
It is a rationale that will fuel the belief - lingering among Democrats since Al Gore's failed 2000 presidential run - that the Clintons always put themselves before their party.
It was certainly a feeling reinforced during the death-by-a-thousand-cuts primaries when both Clinton and her husband, Bill, launched numerous vicious attacks on Obama even when it was clear that she could not win her party's nomination.
Clinton's appearance on the campaign trail at an Obama event in Florida today will reportedly concentrate on McCain instead of Palin.
"Attacking Palin is checkers; attacking McCain on the economy is chess," a Clinton aide commented.
While the Obama camp has asked Clinton to step up her campaigning in the blue-collar states - such as Ohio and Pennsylvania - where she did so well in the primaries, Clinton has said she would also campaign in Texas, where she is not popular, because there is money there and she needs to pay off $US2 0million ($24.5 million) of campaign debt.
Her refusal to roll up her sleeves against Palin, who describes herself as "a pit bull with lipstick", has already come under questioning by Democratic apparatchiks. "The strategic imperative right now is to do something about Palin and prevent her cutting through the race," said Democratic strategist Tad Devine. "She is practising the same slash-and-burn politics of division of the Bush years. Hillary Clinton can make the charge that Governor Palin represents the far Right."
Palin has taken aim squarely at the 18 million voters who preferred Clinton to Obama during the primary campaign. It is a delicate mission for the New York senator to persuade them, after all her harsh words, that Obama is the right candidate for president.Hillary is far better off supporting Democrats running for House and Senate seats, than she is supporting Obama. That way, she has credit in the bank if Obama loses. She has none if Obama wins.

Every politician has powerful benefactors
Except one
Obama had bunches of powerful benefactors. The Ayers family. Tony Rezko. The Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Emil Jones.
McCain had Keating, his father-in-law, and Cindy.
Biden is in big with law firms and MBNA. I thought this tidbit indicated just how incestuous the realtionships are:Incidentally, one of Biden's top donors, law firm Baron & Budd, was in the news recently because its founder, trial lawyer Fred Baron, acknowledged paying for former presidential candidate John Edwards's mistress to re-locate. Baron & Budd employees have given Biden $108,100 during his career. A number of other plaintiff firms are among Biden's top contributors.Trial lawyers look after their own.
Funny thing, but the Mom of five from Wasilla seems to have got there all by herself. One can't imagine that the oil companies like her much. Admittedly, her immediate family provided lots of support, but they don't rate as a "powerful benefactor".
Nobody will be asking Palin "who sent you" when she arrives in Washington. She'll go there as the people's choice. McCain won't have sent her. Instead, he'll recognize her as a powerful benefactor, because she was the only running mate he could have chosen who would energize all factions of the GOP base - evangelicals, fiscal conservatives, hawks, social conservatives and the irreligious (me and my wife, for starters; Heather MacDonald seems iffy).

Obama launches Democrat Female misses at Palin
Not a good tactical move
It strikes me as sexist that, as the NYT reports:Senator Barack Obama will increasingly lean on prominent Democratic women to undercut Gov. Sarah Palin and Senator John McCain, dispatching Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton to Florida on Monday and bolstering his plan to deploy female surrogates to battleground states, Obama advisers said Thursday. With the McCain-Palin team courting undecided female voters, including some who backed Mrs. Clinton in the Democratic primaries, Obama aides said they were counting on not only Mrs. Clinton but also Democratic female governors to rebut Ms. Palin — and, by extension, Mr. McCain. Those governors include Janet Napolitano of Arizona and Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas.Shouldn't his VP candidate be the one trying to undercut Palin? It seems Obama thinks the VP slot is a female role. Be that as it may, there is a delicious irony in Obama sending the female VP picks he passed over to attack Palin. It will not go unnoticed by Hillary supporters that he now expects her to do the dirty work against a GOP female VP pick. I'm sure Palin will find a witty way to use that against Obama.

Obama: Community Organizer or Communist Agitator?
Pity the MSM couldn't clear that up for us
The McCain/Palin campaign is too polite to attack Barack about his past terrorist and communist associations. The pro-Hillary blogs aren't. I counted 180+ links to pro-Hillary blogs at Just Say No Deal. Some of those blogs loathe Obama with an intensity that rivals the KOS kids hatred of George W. Bush. They've also been digging up the dirt on Obama. Stuff you won't find in the NYT. Stuff you won't even find in right-of-center blogs. Take Investigate Barack Obama. This blogger provides dozens of links to articles describing Obama's shady associations with anti-American radicals. Here's Why is Obama Hiding the Truth About William Ayers? Follow the Money:But William Ayers was not just some guy who “lives in Barack’s neighborhood.” He is a well-known and controversial Professor of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. And Obama wants you to believe that he knew nothing of Ayers views or politics even though Barack participated in public forums with him there? I don’t think so.
But that is not all. Barack also was essentially an employee of Bill Ayers for eight years.
In 1995, the Chicago Annenberg Challenge was created to raise funds to help reform the Chicago public schools. One of the architects of the Challenge was none other than Professor Bill Ayers. Ayers co-wrote the initial grant proposal and proudly lists himself on his own website as the co-founder of the Challenge.
And who did William Ayers, co-creator of the Challenge, help select as the new director of the board for this program? Barack Obama. Barack Obama was the first Chairman of the Board of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge. This appointment came at a crucial time in Barack’s life. He was on the verge of challenging longtime state Senator Alice Palmer for her job. When Barack decided to run, it is no surprise that he turned to William Ayers and his wife, Bernardine Dohrn for help in organizing the campaign and in hosting his first fundraiser in the district. The next two links are even more damaging to Obama. They are embedded in the blurb recommending them:Must read article by Cliff Kincaid called "Communism in Chicago and the Obama Connection," and here is a quote: "Palmer, Ayers, Dorhn, and Young--are much more than [previously] described. The evidence assembled in this report suggests that these individuals--and many more--are part of a network of people with socialist and / or communist connections who have been a key part of Obama's life and career." PDF file
--Here is an 8 part video of Cliff Kincaid's press meeting concerning "Communism in Chicago and the Obama Connection" Watch: Youtube VideoThe PDF file catalogs a disturbing networks of communists and Weather Underground alumni and supporters surrounding Barack Obama.
Of course, the MSM has no interest in this information. But they no longer control the flow of information in this society. If their collective aim was to elect a Democrat, they did everything wrong. The only clean Democrat in the race (clean in a relative sense) was Clinton. What did the MSM do? They protected Edwards from a growing scandal. Edwards splits the Iowa caucuses vote with Clinton and gives Obama early momentum. He goes on to defeat Clinton, his record barely vetted by anyone, let alone the MSM.
Now, in the cauldron of a Presidential campaign, people are starting to go through Obama's records more carefully. The vicious attacks on Palin are driving people on both sides of the political fence to dig. Of course, they use Google, and, of course, Google finds all those bloggers who did the research the MSM couldn't bother with. Ironically, one of the biggest troves of dirt on Obama has been assembled by pro-Hillary bloggers. That information is going to drip out into the blogosphere and some of the most damaging information is going to make it to the public.
Conclusion: By promoting rather than vetting Obama, the MSM deprived the Democrats of the candidate best able to win in 2008. McCain has taken full advantage of their partisan lack of professionalism.

So much for Obama's bi-partisan credentials
McCain's withering response when he changed his mind on supporting a bi-partisan reform bill
February 6, 2006
The Honorable Barack Obama
United States Senate
SH-713
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Senator Obama:
I would like to apologize to you for assuming that your private assurances to me regarding your desire to cooperate in our efforts to negotiate bipartisan lobbying reform legislation were sincere. When you approached me and insisted that despite your leadership’s preference to use the issue to gain a political advantage in the 2006 elections, you were personally committed to achieving a result that would reflect credit on the entire Senate and offer the country a better example of political leadership, I concluded your professed concern for the institution and the public interest was genuine and admirable. Thank you for disabusing me of such notions with your letter to me dated February 2, 2006, which explained your decision to withdraw from our bipartisan discussions. I’m embarrassed to admit that after all these years in politics I failed to interpret your previous assurances as typical rhetorical gloss routinely used in politics to make self-interested partisan posturing appear more noble. Again, sorry for the confusion, but please be assured I won’t make the same mistake again.

As you know, the Majority Leader has asked Chairman Collins to hold hearings and mark up a bill for floor consideration in early March. I fully support such timely action and I am confident that, together with Senator Lieberman, the Committee on Governmental Affairs will report out a meaningful, bipartisan bill.
You commented in your letter about my “interest in creating a task force to further study” this issue, as if to suggest I support delaying the consideration of much-needed reforms rather than allowing the committees of jurisdiction to hold hearings on the matter. Nothing could be further from the truth. The timely findings of a bipartisan working group could be very helpful to the committee in formulating legislation that will be reported to the full Senate. Since you are new to the Senate, you may not be aware of the fact that I have always supported fully the regular committee and legislative process in the Senate, and routinely urge Committee Chairmen to hold hearings on important issues. In fact, I urged Senator Collins to schedule a hearing upon the Senate’s return in January.
Furthermore, I have consistently maintained that any lobbying reform proposal be bipartisan. The bill Senators Joe Lieberman and Bill Nelson and I have introduced is evidence of that commitment as is my insistence that members of both parties be included in meetings to develop the legislation that will ultimately be considered on the Senate floor. As I explained in a recent letter to Senator Reid, and have publicly said many times, the American people do not see this as just a Republican problem or just a Democratic problem. They see it as yet another run-of-the-mill Washington scandal, and they expect it will generate just another round of partisan gamesmanship and posturing. Senator Lieberman and I, and many other members of this body, hope to exceed the public’s low expectations. We view this as an opportunity to bring transparency and accountability to the Congress, and, most importantly, to show the public that both parties will work together to address our failings.
As I noted, I initially believed you shared that goal. But I understand how important the opportunity to lead your party’s effort to exploit this issue must seem to a freshman Senator, and I hold no hard feelings over your earlier disingenuousness. Again, I have been around long enough to appreciate that in politics the public interest isn’t always a priority for every one of us. Good luck to you, Senator.
Sincerely,
John McCain
United States Senate

Obama has lost
McCain just gave the Hillary supporters a reason to vote for him
I've been looking through a pro Hillary website called Hillary is 44. The content is so astonishing I wondered if it was a fake site set up by one of Rove's secret agents. The people, mainly women, so far as I can tell, loathe Obama. Take this post entitled "FLIM FLAM CON MAN OBAMA LEARNED FROM OLD TIME CHICAGO POLITICS". If the McCain team mined that trove, they'd give Palin enough verbal stilettos to carve Obama into tiny little pieces.
The Hillary is 44 commenters watched the Palin speech. Scroll down the page to where Palin starts speaking. Here's a sample (I skipped the ones where the language is unprintable):Gorgeous kids. Proud papa. Picture perfect. Normal family.Love what she said about special-needs kids.Body blow!!!! Small town people “are ALWAYS proud of America”.Nice reference to bitter and clingy. Pulling that scab off that still festering wound. She’s cool as a cucumber. Wow.The nice thing is she DOES believe this, that is what IS refreshingEthics over ego. Great juxtaposition. Tones of Kennedy’s ask not speech. Lots of Dem references…I can just hear the MSM…complain about her “delivery” or her voice, or her pauses….they will not get her on ACHIEVEMENTAnd truth to the rumor Biden just threw himself into the Delaware?LMAO! Biden has to debate THIS???? OMFG LMAO!They didn’t think she’d be an attack dog? She’s an attack bull!I tell ya, this is SO MUCH MORE REAL that the pomp and coronation of ObamaThe littlest daughter is a star!! Adorable and waves to everyone. If 5 children proves too much, I’ll adopt the little girl.looks like you think the obama camp, got nuked by a woman? i bet hillary is secretly proud….If this typical of the reaction of active Hillary supporters, then Obama is in deep trouble. And these people are going to figure out that voting McCain/Palin in 2008 gives Hillary a shot in 2012.
This is turning into a fascinating election. Piper is a great asset on the ticket. Slicking down her baby brother's hair while her mother was giving the speech of her lifetime was pure TV magic.

I'm sick of all this talk of years of experience
It's what you can do in those years that counts
In two years as Governor of Alaska, she cleaned up a cesspool of corruption in her own party, took on big oil and bent it to her will, and negotiated a natural gas pipeline deal that will pipe natural gas, currently being flared off as waste, down to the lower 48.
Not bad for her first two years work.
In his lifetime in the Senate, Joe Biden has achieved nothing of significance, unless you count insulting and denigrating conservatives in Senate confirmation hearings. Clarence Thomas was one such who holds no regard for blowhard Joe. As some wit quipped, Joe Biden has had one year's experience 36 times.
So, who would you want in an executive job? Sarah or Joe?

More reaction to Palin's speech
Proof that a day is a long time in politics
John Skookum, commenting on Clive Crook's blog at Atlantic.com, gets what Palin is about:Sarah Palin, on the other hand, comes from a lower-middle-class family in a little hick town out in the howling wilderness. Though she was a high school basketball star, Title IX had not yet been implemented in all its bean-counting glory, so she had to enter a demeaning beauty pageant to win a scholarship for a fluff degree from a cow college. After her shotgun wedding to a union roughneck, by most people's lights, she should have ended up a housewife or a waitress. Yet all by herself, she has blazed a path through Alaska politics that is strewn with the dead bodies of powerful and corrupt male politicians who underestimated her.
She negotiated head-to-head with the chiefs of the most powerful oil conglomerates in the world, bent them to her will, and raised their severance taxes almost 30%. She took a natural gas pipeline project across Canada that had been knocking around for 30 or 40 years without any progress, negotiated with the Canadian and US governments, oil and gas corporations, unions, Indian tribes and who can say who else, and had the deal wrapped up in red ribbon in a matter of months. That pipeline will soon be warming American homes in the winter with cheap, clean fuel produced on American soil by American union workers.
And now, after almost a week of pressure and scrutiny that would have driven most people to weeping, trembling catatonia, she delivers this tour-de-force speech that in all likelihood has single-handedly saved the faltering campaign of the old war horse John McCain. I get the feeling that Sarah Palin is just getting warmed up and there is lot more to come. Obama must have got a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach when he learned that her teleprompter failed halfway through the speech.
Update: Jonathan Martin's Blog at the politico claims Palin's teleprompter did not break.Perhaps there were moments where it scrolled slightly past her exact point in the speech. But I was sitting in the press section next to the stage, within easy eyeshot of the Teleprompter. I frequently looked up at the machine, and there was no serious malfunction. A top convention planner confirms this morning that there were no major problems.. One of his commenters responded:Palin's difficulties were corroborated here: http://www.politickerca.com/benvandermeer/2124/palin-speech-had-technical-difficulty They were further called "intermittent" here: http://www.newshounds.us/2008/09/04/conflicting_reports_from_fox_on_palin_teleprompter.php I'm going to go on a limb and presume that you were neither reading the teleprompter over her shoulder nor watching the teleprompter exclusively, which suggests you just might have missed some of the alleged difficulties. I'm not calling you a liar or anything like that. I'm just suggesting that you may have rushed to judgment on this one a little early.Rich Lowry at the Corner said:I’m told by a McCain aide that the teleprompter operator mistakenly rolled through the applause lines throughout the speech. So he rolled over the first two lines of the next paragraph after applause. But she was unfazed by it.It wouldn't take a major malfunction to throw off a teleprompter user; just scrolling lines out of sight would be enough.Kathryn Jean Lopez responded to Lowry, saying:re: Palin & the Teleprompter
I can vouch for that. I was trying to read along. Some of the improvising, I think, had to do with that. But she clearly knew her speech.Personally, I did notice her look down at here notes once. At the time i wondered why, because she was using a teleprompter.

Ball
Meet Palin, welcome to out of here
Sarah Palin stood up and delivered big time. The Democrats must be unhappy that Obama played safe and picked Biden instead of, say, that other woman.
If Hillary still wants to be president, her only chance is to ensure Barack loses. Then she has a shot against McCain or Palin. Would she want to go up against Palin, a self-made woman? It would be a real fun campaign.

Obama shows some class
Pity his acolytes don't
Obama, to his credit, said the right thing:"Let me be as clear as possible," Obama said. "I think people's families are off-limits, and people's children are especially off-limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as governor or her potential performance as a vice president."
Obama said reporters should "back off these kinds of stories" and noted that he was born to an 18-year-old mother.
"How a family deals with issues and teenage children, that shouldn't be the topic of our politics, and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that's off-limits."I especially appreciated his noting that he was born to an 18-year-old mother.

Will John McCain throw Sarah Palin under the bus?
Never
McCain would go back to the Hanoi Hilton before he'd do that.
Only a man of Obama's great character throws his grandmother, his pastor of 20 years, and anyone else who proves politically awkward under the bus.

Thompson and Lieberman speak for McCain
Great speeches with real substance
My wife was not aware of the details of what McCain went through as a guest at the Hanoi Hilton. Thompson moved her to tears as he described McCain's service for his country.
Lieberman did not betray his Democratic principles in his speech but he gave a great speech on McCain's behalf. His close was very effective, asking America to vote for the man, not the party.
McCain will get a bounce from this.

Palin's Daughter's Pregnancy
So what?
The Palin family says she plans to marry the father, her boyfriend. Millions of people have gotten married because the woman got pregnant. Been there, done that.

The NYT provides context for a leftist slam on Palin
Thank you, NYT
Leftists quote Palin as asking "what is it exactly that the V.P. does every day?".
Here's the venerable NYT:As recently as last month, Ms. Palin appeared to dismiss the importance of the vice presidency in an interview with Larry Kudlow of CNBC, who asked her about her prospects for the job.
“I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me, what is it exactly that the V.P. does every day?” Ms. Palin told Mr. Kudlow. “I’m used to being very productive and working real hard.”Seems like she didn't want a dead-end job; the sort of job previous VPs, such as Harry Truman, endured. Context is all. A professional journalist quotes in context. For once, the Times does that. It is a rare event, so we shall treasure it.

Palin's foreign affairs experience trumps Obama's
Ask Canada
Early on in his campaign, Obama claimed he wanted to renegotiate NAFTA. Obviously, he didn't consult Canada. Here's how it played out:On Sunday, the Associated Press reported about a memo written by Joseph DeMora, an official at the Canadian consulate in Chicago. The memo said on Feb. 8 "Goolsbee candidly acknowledged the protectionist sentiment that has emerged, particularly in the Midwest, during the primary campaign. He cautioned that this messaging should not be taken out of context and should be viewed as more about political positioning than a clear articulation of policy plans," the AP reported.
Meanwhile, the Bimbo from Alaska negotiates a deal with a Canadian company to pipe huge quantities of natural gas from Alaska, through Canada, to the lower 48 states.
Let's see now: Obama insulting Canada and throwing an adviser under the bus, versus the Bimbo negotiating a deal that benefits her home state, Canada, and America?
Maybe we should poll our allies about our candidates' foreign affairs experience. It could surprise Obama, who seems only to hear our enemies. How else to explain his equating the rape of Georgia to our destruction of Saddam's fascist regime.
Oh, "Bimbo from Alaska"? That's how the Obama campaign sees her. I'm almost sorry for them. They have no idea how a woman of Sarah Palin's strength is going to appeal to Americans, especially Hillary supporters.

The Palins are an old-fashioned family
Coping with Sarah's new role comes naturally to them
I grew up in a country town, first of four children. We were dirt-poor by modern standards. No refrigerator. Wood/coal fired oven. One beat-up old car two decades old. But we didn't know we were poor. Rich was having your father survive World War II. Everyone pitched in to help. I was 12 when my only sister was born. I was soon carting her around on my hip as I did my household duties. Little sister is now a mother of four adults and head of her own consulting firm.
So I looked at this series of unpretentious photos from McCain's daughter's blog. She captures the Palin family in action, behind the scenes. Scroll down until you see the Palin family back-stage. You can see the way the mother and daughters share the care. That's the way it used to be done. If there were sons present, they'd be helping, too.
I sure hope she's setting an example to those millions of young married couples who want children but can't find the time to actually have them. If you can become a Governor of a State, a possible Vice President, and even President, while having five kids, then you can make time to build a family. In today's environment, both parents can work from home on a flexible schedule, and care for their family. The best part is you can recruit the older kids to look after the latest additions, if you have three or four kids.
But hey, aren't we contributing to over-population by having too many kids? Actually, no. We need more kids. A lot more kids. The baby boomers didn't have enough kids and the population is aging fast (i.e. the older cohorts are growing larger relative to the younger cohorts). That is very bad for the economy and even worse for Government funded Ponzi schemes, such as Social Security and Medicare.
The leftists who wonder how Sarah Palin can have five kids and still be effective don't understand how real families work.

A woman president is very probable
But only if Obama loses
Here's the scenario:
If Obama wins in 2008, he runs in 2012. By then, Hillary will be too old to head the ticket.
Suppose McCain wins in 2008. McCain turns 76 in 2012, so he decides to pass the torch to Palin. Obama is banished to the Senate for a Biden-like lifetime to replace Teddy Kennedy as the Democrat's most prominent loser. Hillary is redeemed and runs against Palin. Woman versus woman. A no-lose proposition for genuine feminists (including me).
If McCain hangs on to run in 2012, it means Palin failed to meet expectations, and he'd likely face Hillary
The only conclusion is that Hillary can win in 2012 only if Obama loses in 2008. Please explain this to your Hillary supporters and your feminist friends. They can't lose if they vote McCain.

Support Real Journalism
Cancel that NYT subscription and share the money between the two Michaels
I mean Michael Yon and Michael Totten.
What really happened in Georgia? Totten provides the reporting the MSM should be doing but can't. He deserves a Pullet Surprise. I suspect he'd treat it like Clarence Thomas treated his law degree from Harvard.
I just donated to both of them. I also donated to McCain for the first time. Palin just got me excited again (count the posts).

Why Palin became a beauty queen
Plus more links to send the doubters
First up, an article from the UK Daily Mail online edition. The article is titled "Why John McCain's beauty queen running mate has a grizzly bear on her office wall". That sets the flavor of the article.
I've seen a lot of leftist commentary slamming Palin because she entered a beauty contest. The Mail online article provides much needed context:‘Sarah wanted to be a journalist. She wanted to go to university but knew the family budget was slim. So she went in for a beauty contest because it offered money.’
Sarah entered the Miss Wasilla pageant in 1984, which she won wearing a red Crimplene dress she made herself.
The following spring she came second in Miss Alaska, winning a £5,000 scholarship to Idaho University, where she studied journalism.
Sarah eloped with Todd, her childhood sweetheart, in 1988. Her mother said: ‘It was a shock but she did it because she knew we couldn’t afford a big white wedding. They have been together ever since. He is her rock.’I suspect a lot of parents would wish their daughters would follow that example.

McCain is running against Congress
His Missouri Rally demonstrated that
I turned on C-Span to see Governor Mike Huckabee warming up the crowd for McCain. He was followed by Governor Mitt Romney, who was brief, but extremely supportive. McCain followed and spoke about the need to reform Washington. Palin followed and gave a strong showing, backing up McCain's anti-corruption, anti-Washington, anti-pork position, and described what she had done in Alaska to clean up that mess.
The crowd lapped it up. McCain has hit a home-run with the selection of Palin. That's what I was hoping for, but not expecting. But we can now see how his campaign strategy is falling into place. It's the mavericks taking on corruption in Washington and fighting for America. The Obama strategy of painting McCain as Bush III will not work.
What was that I said about McCain getting inside Obama's OODA loop?
Oh, how's McCain's campaign going? Like the Blue Angel Hercules taking off from Cleveland's Burke Lakefront Airport. I photographed it yesterday, as it roared into the sky. Note the JATO (Jet Assist TakeOff) units on each side of the plane? That's what Palin is doing for campaign McCain.
