I was surprised to see McCain people out, too. All white men, they were led by a single Young Republican-style staffer (button-down shirt and crisp khakis). They did some voter reg, but not much. Mainly they handed out bumper stickers. Someone snapped a picture of me with the lead McCain volunteer. It was very JibJab. After not too long, the McCain people sort of drifted away.As I predicted, things have picked up now that the conventions and Labor Day have passed. Total registered by my team today: 108 Pennsylvania, 8 New Jersey. Just for comparison's sake, from the beginning of the Vote for Change voter registration drive on May 10th and the opening of the convention on August 25th, we registered 433 people total. Things will really pick up later this month, and then peak the first week of October. The deadline to register to vote in Pennsylvania is October 6th. (New Jersey's deadline is October 14th.) There are about 2 million people who are eligible but not registered in PA. We'll easy get 100 per event in late September; the first weekend of October we'll probably be getting 100 every two hours. Major upcoming events: On September 28th is the Philadelphia Puerto Rican Day parade, a huge event held on the Ben Franklin Parkway that will attract 10,000 people. October 3rd is First Friday in Old City, which will be big. But we really need to be out at rush hour every day and shopping centers and big community events on every weekend. So: Four weeks to the voter registration deadline, eight weeks to the election. Time to get it in gear. She's disappeared from public view except for carefully controlled campaign events. I wonder if there is a reason for that. In fact, I helped the guy in my section distribute them, and we stored the empty bags under my seat. It should have occurred to us that given how cynical and manipulative the Republicans are, they might resort to stealing flags to try to attack Obama. Even so, anyone who has ever run an event knows there are few good alternatives. To store and transport large amounts of supplies, you can only use garbage bags or cardboard boxes, and boxes require two hands. The McCain campaign has said it will air no ads that day.Hostilities resume at 12:01 a.m. Friday. At first I thought, No, that's ridiculous. This is a major political party with big time professionals putting this together. Nothing is left to chance. I mean, is this the RNC or a scene out Spinal Tap or Waiting for Guffman? I still have a bit of a hard time believing they're quite that incompetent. But when you figure in what appears to be the utter lack of any logic for this school being behind McCain and the fact that it has 'Walter Reed' in its name, I'm really not sure you can discount this possibility.Imagine if Obama's team had made this mistake. Why am I cheering the invasion of another country, after being against the invasion of Iraq? Because Pakistan is where the people who attacked us are.Plus, this:The raid has electoral implications in all three countries involved. Barack Obama was chided when he suggested that U.S. troops out to attack targets in Pakistan; the Democrat then blasted his Republican rival, John McCain, last week for his reluctance to pursue Pakistan-based Al Qaeda operatives. Afghan President Karzai is facing reelection next year -- and is walking a fine line between his U.S. benefactors and Pakistani neighbors. And the L.A. Times notes that "the strike came just three days before Asif Ali Zardari, the head of the Pakistan People's Party, is seeking the presidency in a vote by Pakistani lawmakers."When Obama called for a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq, Bush and McCain criticized him for it and then turned around and adopted his policy. When Obama called for attacking Taliban and al Qaeda on the Pakistan/Afghan border, Bush and McCain again criticized him for it and then turned around and adopted his policy. By the time the election rolls around, McCain's campaign slogan will be, "Just like Obama, only old and white!" It's not a far reach to go from if to when. ...They tried to dump a lot of this news on the Labor Day holiday with a major hurricane hitting land and it didn't work. They are completely off message, the revamped convention (which already lost a day's worth of attacking Obama) is at a crossroads, and the questions from the talking heads will be all about Palin.I actually hope he keeps her on the ticket at this point, this is too entertaining...McCain has to keep her on the ticket; dumping her would be such a disaster that it would be the effective equivalent of withdrawing from the race himself. Still, this is going to be fun. She was part of a secessionist party? She ran Ted Stevens' 527? GOP lawyers are vetting her now? [Update: It's definitely shopped - see comments.] This is evidence for image is characteristic of something I suspected: Picking Palin isn't about appealing primarily to social conservative wingnuts or to women at all. It's about appealing to dumbass unaffiliated white men who might otherwise be inclined to vote Dem on economic issues, while also picking someone who is (at least) unoffensive to the culture war right. While she won't pick up McCain more evangelical votes, it will attract meatheads who'll say, "Bro, hot chick who likes guns in the White House!", and high-five each other. Also? She has her finger on the trigger of that weapon. I don't have an issue with people who like firearms; I do have an issue with people who say they like firearms but don't look like they know the first goddamn thing about firearm safety.(Via P6.) Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania has decided to accept funding for abstinence-only sex education from the Bush administration for programs in school districts that want them. Re-defining the word "commitment", Rendell's spokeperson said that the governor remained committed to comprehensive sex education, but that certain communities, for moral reasons "or what have you", want abstinence-only programs.Abstinence-only sex education often contains "major errors and distortions" (often called "lies" in the vernacular) and has been shown to be useless - kids exposed to it have the same sexual behavior as those who receive no sex ed at all. What it does is provide a purely political benefit for right-wing religious voters who hate sex, and wish to visit punishment on teens who engage in it. The radio report I heard claimed that new safeguards had been put in place to assure the scientific accuracy of the information that would be provided to the kids. Unless they intend to put monitors in every classroom to make sure right-wing instructors don't deviate from the text, I don't know how they intend to enforce that promise.I am very, very angry at the Rendell administration right now. Uh, ok. She's 44, younger than Obama, which kind of blunts McCain's inexperience argument against Obama. I mean, at his age McCain has a fair chance of dying in office, so a young, unknown VP nominee is ... eccentric. Also, Alaska politics has a lot of shady characters, and I would suppose Palin has links to some of them. Are there any pictures of her with Ted Stevens? What a gimme.Obviously, McCain is pulling a desperation move by skipping over all the likely, better-qualified prospects in order to pick a woman. (I guess Ferraro declined.) Oooh, mavericky. See? It's all about change, and McCain is hep to that, you cats. I look forward to the VP debate. I'd advise Gov. Palin to do some serious prep.Update: Wikipedia informs me that Palin is a good-government type who clashed with Stevens over his corruption. That makes it a better pick. She has a bunch of other good resume items, too. Having said that, she's been governor of a state with a tiny population for less than two years and her major accomplishment is scuttling the bridge to nowhere.Update^2: So I hear her wikipedia entry had been, um, enhanced. Too tired to read more now. Early to bed. So everyone in Denver has been great. The only (comical) exception was this morning. The setup is that rides to the airport today are hard to get. The shuttles are alll completely booked (I neglected to make a reservation) & even car service was near impossible to find. Fortunately, the city runs a special express bus service to the airport, but to catch it I had to get to a station a couple of miles from the hotel. So, I called a cab.The cab driver was clearly a veteran, & after establishing that I was a tourist, tried to convince me there was no airport bus. When we got to the station, the bus was waiting. The lighted sign on the front said 'AIRPORT', but the cabbie insisted that it didn't go there. Given that the taxi fare to the airport would have been worth $75 to him, his motive was pretty clear. It was pretty funny. Posted by Mithras on August 29, 2008 at 08:33 AM in Whatever | Permalink | Comments (1) | TrackBack (0) Digg This | Save to del.icio.us Obamania! Got back from Invesco late but stayed up to allow Wolf & friends tell me what to think of it all. They said I should have loved it, so I do. Although when I left the stadium, my opinion was that the acceptance speech was competent but hardly stirring. Clearly, I was mistaken. I have to add, when the fireworks erupted at the end, those of us in the nosebleed seats nearly shit our pants. Also, leaving the stadium & making our way back to downtown was an epic clusterfuck. Nearly all of us had never even been to the stadium before. Someone forgot to plan for 70,000 lost tourists wandering around in the dark. Signage or a PA announcemment would have helped.
